Sandwich or soup
last modified: Tuesday, November 15, 2005 (5:21:02 PM)
So theres a potbellys sandwich works (clearly a sandwich co for those of you without one...quite delicious too so you should try one if you never have) anyways today they're running a promotion...give three cans of food and they'll give you a free sandwich. Now, canned foods nowadays almost cost as much as a sandwich and by me it is more than a sandwich. So...they question is...donate food that costs more than a sandwich...or buy a sandwich. dilema dilema

Well, if the sandwiches cost less than three cans of soup, obviously the shop is going about this the wrong way. Rather than giving away sandwiches, they should simply donate their profits for the day to a food bank. Food banks have connections--they can get food for cheaper and without having to pay taxes.

I guess the purpose for the donation was to help out others. The sandwich wasn''t meant to be of equal value. Kinda like people who receive a tax write off for donations. It''s just a tiny incentive. Get some karma with your grub. You can always find cheapo cans at the dollar store.

Some people need some sort of tangible incentive in order for them to do things for others. Sad statement about the society, yes, but, true nonetheless.

If you can afford better, I''d point out that buying "cheapo" food is pretty lame just to get a free sandwich. If you were poor, I don''t think you''d like to be given beans that have been on the shelf longer than you''ve been alive. The whole point of the effort is for people to reach deep down inside of them and show some kindness towards their fellow man.

If you buy cheapo cans just to get a free sandwich, you''ll get no positive karma points.

Cutie,
I would like to point out that the same campbells soup you get at the highend grocery store for $1 to a 1.25 each, Can be found at the Dollar store for 2 for a buck and there is no diference between them and after all it''s the thought that counts in the first place does it not.
After all the person can just eat the soup and not give anything to the cause in the first place, So even if they pay top dollar or get it for a little bit cheaper it should not matter.
As for Karma that is the fuzzy feeling you get in your gut not a thing that can be bought with money or good deeds, It come from being nice to your fellow man or woman whatever the case may be.
As for the old bean thing, As a kid of 5 to 9 I would have been very happy to get year old beans and been very greatful for them,Not everyone in live can afford the best and getting something to eat no matter what it is can sometime be better than going hungry.
I learned these lessons early in life and I think you should reread your post and think about what you just wrote.

Um, I shop at the dollar store all the time. Always have. I grew up dirt poor, and since you don''t know anything about me, you wouldn''t know that either. I''m not going into a long personal story here, but I agree with Roy''s input. At certain points in my life, I wouldn''t (still wouldn''t) have refused food from anyone. Buying a can of something edible is better than someone donating pie crusts or gravy. Something people can''t even eat! And I always see that sort of thing in the donation bin. If you buy cheapo cans, your donation is appreciated. There are those who go out of their way to donate big amounts to look important or try to compensate for their own shortcomings as well. But you cannot cast judgment on someone else''s efforts, if they don''t have the means to do what you can. Don''t you remember the story of the Little Drummer Boy? He didn''t have gold to give, but he gave what HE could. And that is what''s most important.

I agree with you backlot. Karma has nothing to do with how much you spend. It is determined by the intentions in the heart; the intentions behind your actions. Shopping at the dollar store is not a measure of one''s wealth, but it is a good measure of one''s intelligence. It''s one thing to have money and another to know how to make that money go a long way. To think that someone in need would care where you bought there meal is callow.
