Why Letters for Japanese Anime Titles?
last modified: Sunday, April 17, 2005 (6:17:35 PM)
I am not as learned about anime as I would like to be. I am curious to know if anyone out there can explain for sure why many Japanese Anime titles tend to have English letters attached to them. For example, the different seasons of Sailor Moon are labeled with R,S, and SuperS, there is of course Samurai X, Initial D, Vampire Hunter D, and tons of others. Are there just as many different reasons for this or has it become a kind of tradition? I know Sailor Moon R stands for Romance right? But I am not sure about some others...I must sound ridiculous to those of you who know, but this is really interesting to me and I would really appreciate some light on the subject! Thank you!

Well, the Sailormoon seasons actually stand for something (Sailor Moon Romance, Stars, SuperStars, SailorStars <-I believe that''s the case). As for Vampire Hunter D, well, D is the main character''s name. Samurai X is the English title for Rurouni Kenshin and is because of the X shaped scar on his cheek.

I''m not sure what the theory is behind all this...but it''s kinda chic for Japanese people to use English, so perhaps this has something to do with it?

I do know that for Dragon Ball Z, Akira Toriyama simply liked ''Z'' and said that it sounded better than Dragon Ball X, or C, or T. Sometimes there is no answer to these things. ^^*
