Making "Generous" Offers
last modified: Tuesday, November 08, 2005 (12:05:26 AM)
I love how some cel collectors email you and think they are giving you a really great offer on a cel, when in reality its more like a slap in the face.

To start. I get "low" offers every day from many collectors, but there are collectors out there that KNOW the value of the cels they are looking at and for them to offer something lower its more insulting.

A lot of you have contacted me about my Mars bank attack cel. And a LOT more of you know what I really paid for that cel. Damn near $1000. Was it worth it, to me yes, to others probably not. But its still my call as to what to price my cels at.

As for needing funds, I am trying to bring together some cash to buy off bills so I can attend a horse school in May for 2 weeks that will cost around $3000. Do I need to funds? no, do I NEED to sell this cel? No. If I needed to sell it would I take a price cut. YES!

I think all to often people get caught up in thinking what they are giving you a great offer, and yes maybe to you it is, but when you offer someone lowering than what they paid, its still not good enough. For most of us, we cannot afford to lose $300 on one cel (thats the cost of a couple cels).

So since this isn't a desperate need for cash I wont sell the cel for anything less. That is my choice, what I want to sell it for is my choice, and I have been very accepting to payment plans and potential trades.

That being said, the only one who should be judging what a "Generous " offer is the seller, since the buyer will never know the full reason why the seller is selling, and what the total price of the cel was. I usually sell my cels at least $75 -$150 less than what I pay. This cel was no different. (Its being offered around $750 for cel collectors I know well)

Hey Nikki. I have to agree with what you said. If it''s a cel you don''t have to ''desperately'' sell because you need funds (I don''t understand why people splurge tremendously on cels and then turn around and take offers on their gallery because of an emergency, shouldn''t you have a backup fund instead of just buying away on cels?) then by all means you have all the right to sell it at whatever price you want. If someone offers it at a price you find acceptable, then that is great. If not, it''s no one''s loss.

Once the cel is in your possession, it''s your right to sell it for as much as you really want. I personally have a few cels in my gallery that no amount of money I can think of that would allow me to part with those cels. It''s basically your personal value on the cel and how much you''ve spent on said cel that determines its worth. If someone doesn''t think the cel is worth as much as you paid for, then that is the reason the person lost out on the cel in the first place.

But I can understand if some have no idea how much you did pay for the cel (like I didn''t know you paid clost to $1000 for it until you e-mailed me about it), and sometimes I do offer lower than what the person intended. This is why I always let the seller know that in no way should they take my offer in an offensive way b/c I truly did not know how much to offer.

Hope you come up with enough cash for your horse school, sounds like fun!

Okay, no offense is meant by this but, I just wanted to say that it''s hard for me to understand why people ask for offers and then are insulted when people give them very low offers at times. People have a variety of reasons for doing this: they''re noob cel collectors, they feel like they might get lucky, they''re poor, they''re optimistic, they have no idea what it''s worth, they did know but they forgot, they''re stupid, etc. In any case, it''s no reason to take offense, it''s easy enough to send them a reply as a simple ''Thanks but no thanks'' Am I the only one that thinks this way?

That is part of the problem with taking offers on cels. You get all kinds of prices offered. And while I understand that it is frustrating to hear people offering you really low amounts, it''s not their fault if (1) they didn''t know how much you paid originally (2) you haven''t put a minimum offer price on it. Everyone in this hobby loves to get bargains, so you can''t blame some people for trying. [at least not too much]

I hope that you are able to pull together the funds without having to let go of such a meaningful piece. If you were willing to pay $1k for it, the cel must be one that you really like! :)
