Resellers, your thoughts?
last modified: Monday, November 23, 2015 (5:32:24 AM)
What are your thoughts on people who pretty much take advantage of fandom through reselling only? I think it sucks because as collectors we have a desperation in us. It can be haunting I'd assume of people who specialize in a single series. In essence, we are perfect targets for this behavior. For me, my collection only revolves around Fatal Fury. Restraint is a pain at times.. I feel a fear exists with the notion that if we don't get 'x' cel, a sequence mate may never appear. I was informed I lost to a reseller. This type of behavior has polluted the video game scene also. I've done write ups about this issue in the past, and it really is a pain in the ass.

Technology has not only made contact amazing and open, but given very greedy people the upper hand to dig into things they have no passion or love for and take advantage of people who do. I'd like to hear some of your horror stories if you'd share =)

I''ve gotten into bidding wars with resellers, I bid my max and then drop it. Then I DON''T buy it from them after. In particular I''m thinking about a couple of Sailor Mars cels I was trying to buy for a gift that have been rotating on eBay for a year on the jacked up resellers price. It''s stupid and frustrating, however, sequence mates always come up if you are in it for the long run. And sometimes they are better than the original you lost, yes it''s something to worry about, but if it''s not an A1End don''t kill yourself over it.

Here''s one from urbantreasurehunterjapan:
http://page13.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r135208042
7,250円

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MARMALADE-BOY-MIKI-KOISHIKAWA-AND-PARENTS-ANIME-PRODUCTION-CEL-/161890245846
$159.99

The cels in this set aren''t bad cels. but they''re boring which is why I rejected them on YJ. Boring cels are worth $0-$50.

The fear of missing out, plays in my mind to. Its a shame that people who are new to cels are the ones most likely to purchase from them, but its not like there are any rules...anyone can sell an item at what they want. Its very frustrating when you see the item you want on ebay the very next day...but also a great feeling when you manage to get ones into your collection instead.

Before cel dealers went online and long before the keep track online tool, it actually was less stressful when it came to deadbeat cel gougers. The worst thing was dealers just did not have inventory or someone beat you to buying the cel. Ok that''s reasonable. But what is not reasonable is how some scumbags are hurting the very collector who might buy from them! IMO, for all the benefits the net has created for our collective hobby the cel scalpers has to rank on the top of the worst trade offs! Flame wars are just drama and you can ignore it. But scalpers are the worst especially when they attempt to dominate the entire market on ebay!

This brings us to the horrid greed-filled ''urbantreasurehunter'' who mainly buys from yjp using this userid ''boo*''. For anyone who does not know this cancer of the planet, do yourself a favor and beat them on YJP if you really want the item! Otherwise the next time you see it on ebay, expect TREMENDOUS price gouging (mark ups of 100%).

Really wish there was a way to report this deadbeat to ebay but there is not. So all cel collectors be forewarned. Good luck!

I actually contacted that guy to see how much he wanted on some cels he beat me on. Now I''m worried I may have just burned myself and stirred him up as more competition. It''s not that terrible right now, but having some reseller in the mix isn''t helping anything.

momo, more like 400%.

lwk, they might give you a tiny discount. Make sure its a really exceptional cel for what you''re paying.

I find it annoying when I''m outbid on a cel, and then it appears the next day on Ebay. There''s always that feeling of, "if only the auction was at another time when I had (or will have) a little more money to outbid the reseller, but now it''s at a price I will never want to pay and it won''t be mine." I also can''t help but wonder if the reseller had a maximum bid price, or if they were bidding any amount to get the cel and their resale price reflects the number of bids it took to get the cel, their acquisition cost, the funds they think they''ll need to buy more cels, or that they don''t really want to sell and they''re using Ebay to gauge interest in one of their favorite shows. However, I remind myself I can lose to any bidder, and I can never be certain as to why any rival bidders are bidding more or less on auctions...

Still, there''s this one cel that''s on Ebay that I really feel should have almost certainly been mine. I bid way over what I thought any collector would pay, and yet I still lost. It has been cycling on Ebay for almost a year for about $440 over Mandarake''s ending price (although, now it''s on sale for only about $280 more).

@guyvarii which cel? if you don''t mind me asking, posting here might bring it more attention from potential bidders you don''t want :P

I share the same thoughts, I think they do set out with a price in mind, on YJ a few months ago there was DBZ sets both had a bundle of cels, I won one lot and the reseller won the other, I think my high bid right at the start put off the reseller and he just focused on what wasn''t getting as much attention, so maybe they just care about the show its from rather than individual cels

If you don''t like the price don''t buy. The cel market was glorious a long time ago, but greed and hoarding has taken over. A lot of that comes form Japan, most of it in fact. Still a lot of very well known dealers do gouge like crazy to keep their business/hobby afloat.
I feel your pain, but a few zealots ruined it for a lot us. I lived in Japan for well over a decade during the height of the boom. Japanese became very contemptuous of foreign ("gaijin") collectors and set up many barriers as well. Hoarding became the last but painful resort once the digital age killed off the handpainted cel market. Several shops closed down as supply dwindled and as hoarding, which still holds true to today, strangled the production cel market. Instead of sitting on a pot of gold, by killing the market, people are sitting on dusty cel books hidden under beds and in closets.

Lost two more auctions to that same reseller. I did win the three auctions I intended to win. I got them for like 8$ each, so I can''t complain at all. I really am curious to hear more from Chris on that situation he discussed. Sounds like a heart breaker.
