"Coming Soon" Rant
last modified: Thursday, July 17, 2008 (1:40:09 PM)
RubberSlug is set as my homepage so when I start up my browser every few days one of the first things I see is the list of new additions on others' websites.
Sanning over the banners I'm intrigued to see what has been added to each gallery but so often there are entries in a "Coming Soon" section.
What a waste of time that is. I hate seeing that slogan.

Some of these sites are guilty of adding new stuff every other day which bumps the other genuine sites off the front page. These are sites that have some proper artwork to display, art that's actually in their hands and I think they deserve more credit. In many cases, they've gone to the effort of scanning their image[s] and preparing a blurb about each piece but that's trounced by another RS user who places a tatty 'stock' image on a plain gallery page. Two minute's work tops.

Not only that, but when the official entry to the gallery is added under its series title, that equals two exposures on the front page and it's the same old shit we've already previewed.

I buy new pieces each week, sometimes 2-10 items, it's just as well I don't have a "Coming Soon" segment because everyone would soon grow to hate seeing my banner constantly on the RS homepage.

It's great to see and learn about new artwork in a gallery but it should be in a collector's posession before making the announcement.

I think what''s worst is hovering over a banner that says "Updated in the Last 24 hour" and you go into the site and see that nothing has been new in the gallery for months.

I totally agree with you, especially your last comment about how the cel should be in the collector''s hands before they update their gallery. It just makes it more meaningful, I think. If they want to do a ''coming soon'' it should only be in the news section of their gallery. That''s my two cents anyway.

I completely agree the coming soon section is a waste of space. If it''s in the owners possession then take sometime put it up and put some thought into adding some information. Good grief! If anything I am guilty of is adding new content including cels but hiding them b/c I am not happy with the descriptions since I am rewriting it and doing additional research. From many of my items I try to share more history about the cel, the character designer and other interesting tidbits. Wouldn''t you agree doing so makes the gallery much more personalized and shows you care to post something more than just the stock photo from whereever it was purchased? We are all busy but come on! Where is the passion and pride in ownership?

What I really loathe are the hidden "coming soon" sections -- so no one but the gallery owner can even preview the items!

Personally, I don''t click on galleries with "Coming Soon" sections. I know a lot of people use it to keep track of what''s coming into their posession, but there have got to be better ways of doing that. Like, a free photobucket account or something.

Even if a gallery has more than a "coming soon" listed in their recently updated stuff, I don''t click. There have been so many times when I''ve looked, and the only reason that other series are showing up is because they updated cels that I''ve already seen.

I agree with Rei, though. Hidden coming soon sections are the worst.

I couldn''t agree with you more. Unfortunately, this has been an issue on RS for years. Yes, years. Even though it says on our log-in pages "You must have in your possession every cel on your site," no act has ever been taken to discourage people from creating coming soon section and using (which in my opinion is abusing) the update feature on the front page. Over a year ago, after a moderator on RS argued up and down in a blog defending coming soon sections, I wrote RS to ask for clarification regarding the policy of displaying cels, the definition of "posession", and what that meant in regards to coming soon sections. Needless to say, I never heard back and no effort was ever made on the part of Jason or the mods to deal with the issue.

Uh, "coming soon" is very much allowed. Read the FAQ:
Do "Coming Soon" section violate the rules that says that I must physically own every cel on my site? back to top
Well, technically if you''ve bought, paid for, or have a cel on hold with someone then the cels are pretty much in your possession. But, if it is just an imaginary dream situation, that is what the "Wishlist" page is for. There are many collectors with coming soon sections, and it doesn''t hurt anyone, unless the cels/images are of someone else''s artwork. It''s basically okay to post cels of whatever disposition (coming soon, in transit, or on hold) as long as there is no conflict with the original seller. If you have people asking to see what you have on the way, you can send them an email (with the cel scan). Regarding watermarked cels, It might help your cause if you can get a scan of the cel without the watermark from the previous, or soon to be previous, owner.

That''s the first I''ve seen of an official coming soon policy. Although the statement "it doesn''t hurt anyone" is up for debate, the clarification is appreciated.

Sletia, the fact that they''re "legal" (and that does appear to be a new FAQ/rule) doesn''t make the sections any less annoying. At least, in my opinion. ^^;;;

It kind of makes me sad, because I used to check lots of RS updates. I''ve looked at hardly anything on RS lately, because most of what I see when I get to the homepage is "Coming Soon" updates. It''s gotten to the point where I don''t even let my mouse hover over gallery titles very often. Yeah, I''m sure I''ve missed some great updates, and that''s sad for me and for the people trying to display their awesome artwork. But hey, this is my hobby, and I don''t need to be irritated by it. ^_~

Besides, if anything, I''d say that FAQ was added after a certain collector was posting pics of another collector''s cels in her actual gallery as a kind of "wishlist." At least, the language seems designed to deal with the details of that *exact* situation.

Ms. Poe

I''ve been debating for years that the "Coming Soon" sections hurt a lot of collectors out there, like Krafty. I never had a coming soon section. I would get a big package in of some incredible stuff, update, and see my RS gallery up on the front page, excited about all of the collectors who will see my banner up and then go to my site to enjoy my new lovelies as much as I do...Then, within only a few hours, will get kicked off the main page by other galleries, 90% of the time by galleries and their "Coming Soon" sections.

I always thought "Coming Soon" sections should be blocked from front page display. So what if it''s a rule? I say we have a vote and see what the ppl who make up this site think. I really want to see them blocked from being displayed on the front page. Have them all you want in your gallery, but keep them off the front page...

But, even then ppl will get crafty, and just update them immediately in their gallery in their respected sections, delete them and then upload them again to get double air time...

I loved being a part of RS, but this was always one of my main issues. "Coming Soon" is always spammed on the front page. I don''t check them anymore. And honestly...I know there''s a sub page where all of the galleries updated recently are...But I NEVER go there...And I don''t see any visitors either 100% of the time...

I feel your pain James...

I had a "coming soon" section back in the day. I''d only update it when I was adding new cels to other sections. I got rid of it because of all the abuse. Now things are even worse. Huzzah~

I don''t do either a "coming soon" or a "new arrivals" gallery (I used to do the latter). I learned (from Vapalla) that if you included a link to the new items in the news section, that was a more effective way to direct newcomers to the nice stuff.

It is true that sometimes I''ll be doing maintenance on my gallery and do something that will accidentally kick off an update announcement. Sometimes this will have a huge long list of galleries, which are just all the ones I''d done tiddy update changes on in the last 24 hours. I can''t do anything about this but temporarily put up a news item that says "Sorry, nothing is new, just routine gallery maintenance."

Random comment: I like your tarot card sidebar!
