The Return of Toonami
last modified: Saturday, May 26, 2012 (6:09:44 PM)
I'm not really one to "blog" per se, but tonight I felt the need to post something because a major piece of my childhood is coming back to TV (...one of the main reasons why I even own a cel gallery here) and I can barely contain my excitement. Yes, I'm talking about the triumphant return of Toonami.

It's been four very long years since the fateful night that Toonami disappeared from the airwaves. I remember sitting on my couch feeling stunned and heartbroken while staring at my TV, wondering if what I just saw really happened. Sure back then we all knew Toonami was slipping in the ratings and that Tom 4 looked like a pre-school show reject, but that still didn't matter. Toonami was Toonami. Unfortunately we didn't realize how precious that block was until it was gone. For us fans that were lucky enough to catch the final broadcast, we were completely unprepared for the blow that CN was about to deal to it's audience. The final Toonami airing was one of the worst sendoffs I have ever seen for anything on TV. There was no prior commercials, promos, warnings, or anything else announcing that this was going to be the last time Toonami would air for four years. It just...happened.

Fast forward those four years and you can see how hard anime has been hit in terms of appearing on American TV. I now see that the decline and end of Toonami was sadly a foreshadowing of what was going to happen to anime on American TV. I can't speak for other countries, but as an American who grew up with Toonami since it's premiere way back in 1997, I can safely say that the block had a huge influence on how anime was received in the states. I know that the anime craze of the 90's will most likely never gain such a foothold with today's kids as it did for my age group, but I still feel a small glimmer of hope now that Toonami is back on the airwaves. Maybe we'll see a resurgence of interest in anime over the next few years or maybe we won't. Either way, this Toonami fan is extremely happy because tonight there's a reason for me to stop doing everything to sit down and watch TV....something I haven't felt the need to do in a very long time.

In honor of anime's best block returning to television, I will be updating my gallery within the next few hours with some good old Toonami favorites such as Yu Yu Hakusho, Sailor Moon, and of course....Dragonball Z! These shows were the staples of my childhood and I could not think of a better way to celebrate Toonami's return to the airwaves than by updating my gallery with cels from some of my block favorites.

Lastly I just wanted to wrap this up with a quick thank you to the people over at Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, and whoever else made this all possible. You've made this Toonami fan extremely happy. =)

very detailed updates!

While I no longer watch dubbed anime I still remember Toonami well. hours of anime that lead right into adult swim afterwards was pure awesomeness!! some years back before I got into streaming anime, toonami, adultswim and G4''s anime unleashed were my only anime sources and they''ve certainly made great contribution to my current anime addiction lol
