The Great Debate...Please read
Ok here's my random question for all those finiky readers out there. Using this site (Rubberslug) as host... how BIG can a cel site be? Like what would be off the wall and no one would bother to look?
I ask this because a good friend of mine. ^_^ Has I kid you not.... 45 cel books of cels. This does NOT include her Hankenmono Cels, Genga collection, or oversized cels.
We have been talking of late and I asked her on 2 occasions why she didn't make herself a gallery. It's been hard of late for her to find cels she really likes and a couple cels she has but after she bought them realized she had same sequence but better, ect of that cel or character.
I offered my help to her so she could scan in her cels but I would size, watermark, and help her make the gallery. And she took me up on my offer.
I am now trying to see what I can do to make it better and still keep it big without making anyone insane while looking at it...
Should I make more than one gallery?
1) Special Cels (hanken, Genga, oversized, ect)
2) normal sized cels all series
3) Fan Cels
Or just make catagories for any and all cels in her collection and just put them on one site.
Another question is just how big in computer lingo will a rubberslug site take when making a cel gallery?? I might run out of room or a fast load time and have to break the gallery's up.
any and all feedback its greatly appreciated!

Okay... Being a "one cel book collector" that I am.. it's hard to grasp the idea of 45 cel books.. > <;;
BUT.. I know exactly how you feel about uploading them.. etc. I am doing this for a friend of mine too (on rubberslug). She has *tons* of cels, and she sends me a giant batch of scans every few months. :D I resize, upload.. arrange.. etc. ;)
(*laughs* I love being the first to see.. mwa ah ah ah ah...)
Okay, back to normal. Here's what I think in answering your questions. I *think* that there shouldn't be a problem uploading *all* of her cels onto rubberslug. I have never read anywhere about a LIMIT on the cels one can display. I think where the problem is lies in the size of the images (and file size). Some people have scans uploaded onto rubberslug that are like.. 3,000 pixels wide. THAT is insane. Keep the image sizes at what is required and the amount of cels shouldn't matter. Also, I doubt that each individual gallery has an "allowance" like say.. a geocities site does. Rubberslug as a whole would have this burden, not the individual galleries. And if you think about it, new galleries pop up every week. And there are also a lot of galleries in here that house hundreds of cels..
IF i were YOU?.. I would keep the public on their toes by uploading a little at a time. Spread that out well enough, and you have updates for ...lessee...... the next 10 years?
OR.. you could have gallery themes, like you suggested. I don't know about different galleries.. that might get confusing for a visitor.
OR you can just show some at a time. Like, one month, show all of one series... next month, all cels that "capture the scene", then "all action shots" .. etc. There is another collector online (not on rubberslug) that shows her many MANY cels this way, a bit at a time.
Many ideas for many cels. Good luck though! :D
Good points. It's mainly though now that I think about it for her to refrence. This way instead of chancing a buy on a cel that she already has she can click away for instant access and view what she has in her current collection.
I seriously doubt it will take me a day or even two days to load all those pics much less edit watermark and place them. But I do know it all starts happening in two weeks as her new comp will be here then. ^_^ I am looking forward to it. I like playing with photoshop and such. so I am sure as it's being done it will all be a little at a time. I've already seen her collection she gets in on standard about 4 or 5 cels every week. I go over on Sat's to visit and I get to have a look-see at all the eye candy.
The other thing is we are talking many of her cels are expensive. but she does have a huge variety...
In regs cels she has Ayashi no Ceres, Marmalade Boy, Vampire Hunter D ^_^, InuYasha, CLAMP, Mosquiton, Hunter X Hunter, Initial D, 5 Star Stories, Hikaru no Go, and several others.
Hankenmomo: Blue Seed, Magic users Club, Kareshi Kanojo, and maybe 1 or 2 more.
Hankenmono Genga: InuYasha (I think), Hikaru no Go (3), Kaikan Phrase, Saiyuki, and several others.
whew* I am glad someone responded ^_^
Jelenity~
Howdy.
Right now, there isn't a limit on gallery size. Geocities has perpetuated this lie that hard drive space is expensive. For all *legal* purposes, hard drive space is rather cheap. When you talk about MP3s and Video, that's where all the hard drive and bandwidth problems of the world come into play. So no, there is no current limit on HD space.
The suggested sizes are kinda on the smallish side. I think it's like 300-400px or so width to prevent your layout from being stretched, but I'll have to check on that. Yes, please avoid the massive 3000px wide scans. Not only can no one see that on any web browser known to man, but it makes it impossible to downlad your gallery unless you're sitting at the server.
45 cel books is massive. I'd sooner throw myself off a cliff than scan 1200 cels. Right now, the uploading interface may annoy you. For speed, keep in mind all that you really have to enter on the add cel page is a cel title (this can be just a space, if you don't remember which picture is which) and a series name.
As mentioned in another thread, right now the images keep refreshing on every page load, so if you don't have a broadband connection prepare to get annoyed very quickly while uploading cels.
I *really* ought to make some sort of batch upload deal. Keep in mind though that not everyone needs a website. If your friend isn't really too concerned one way or the other, I'd just skip it. These things are really for your own enjoyment, like cutting snowflakes out of construction paper in the third grade, but they do take some substantial amount of work.
Good luck. If you need anything from me, just gimme a holler.
It never crossed my mind that she would use this for reference. But with 45 books of cels, she may very well find it useful! But seriously.. the series you mentioned.. i must see.. i *must* see! *gets huge jello eyes*
Ok.. gimme your address.. skip the waiting and the internet.. i'm going on a trip! lol. Okay, maybe not. But an MTT hanken??!!! *dies*. I love MTT..
I hope you go through with this, I would definatly like to see! (even 5 books filled would keep me entertained.. heck.. it doesn't take much to entertain me.. obviously.. ..
.. maybe thats why i'm still writing...)..
Ok.. ttyl! and good luck :D
