Are any cels still made
Are any cels still made for any reason around the world? Has everything gone digital? What about hanken and similar things for magazine covers, artbooks, posters, etc.? Anyone know?
warner brothers makes some post if you buy art
Best we can tell, cels stopped being used in Japan around 2000-2001 (depending on the studio).
This affected everything. Production, as well as hanken art, all went completely CG.
You can find genga and douga hanken as well as production art for more recent shows, but the only cels you will find are Rilezu (re-raised) cels, which are hand painted non-production pieces.

That makes me so sad. I understand why, but I'm sad both as a collector as well as sad for people who probably studied to paint cels and are out of jobs unless they adapted to digital. :(
